Thorin II Oakenshield

Description

This is my headcanon book version of Thorin Oakenshield. I seemingly never manage to draw him with a long beard, so I came up with an explanation :P It is said that Dwarrows never shave, except in grief or in shame. It would be like Thorin to swear not to grow a beard before he reconquers his kingdom or something :P

I know the equipment is highly anachronistic. The shield is a Tallhoffer fencing buckler, circa XVth century, and most importantly, is metallic. I still can't imagine the Dwarrows with wooden shields.

The sword is very long, I know. But since Orcrist was probably Ecthelion's sword, and Ecthelion was known to use a "very long" sword, I originally headcanoned it as being a two-hander - which wouldn't work given that Thorin would be able to use it later, so it couldn't be THAT long. The sword on the pic is an koncerz, a stabbing sword from the XVth to XVIIIth century used by Polish hussars, and most importantly, is very long and used in only one hand. The axe at his belt also includes a pipe - inspired by these Amerindian pipe tomahawks. I imagine Dwarrows to be able to smoke with their weapons. Because that's how awesome they are.
